UPDATE: 02 JUNE 2020 – 11:00 AM

Beginning Tuesday, May 26th

Beginning May 26th, Forest Hills Cemetery and Columbarium will be open to the public from 10am to 4pm. Our new regulations which prohibit dog-walking, bicycling and jogging will take effect on May 26th as well. These regulations were put into place to ensure that the Cemetery grounds and atmosphere are conducive to peaceful reflection and respect for the families and friends who visit their loved ones. Your cooperation is appreciated. Please note that violators will be asked to leave the property. The office will continue to be closed to the public, but we are open by appointment for those who need to make an immediate arrangements.

Although the bathrooms in the Gatehouse remain closed, we have placed port-a-potties just outside the main gate for your convenience.

Masks must be worn at all times while visiting the Columbarium and please respect social distancing.

UPDATE: 15 MAY 2020 – 10:48 AM

After an unprecedented closure, we are looking forward to opening our gates again to the public. The re-opening date will be determined with guidance from Gov. Baker.

Upon re-opening, please be advised that dog walking, bicycling and jogging are no longer permitted within Forest Hills Cemetery. We require all visitors to be respectful of our primary purpose which is to bury the dead and to provide a peaceful and tranquil setting for their families and friends.

We realize that this is a substantial change in policy and thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation. Please note that any visitor not abiding by the new rules will be asked to leave the property.

And please remember to social distance and wear a mask when entering the Cemetery office.

UPDATE: 06 MAY 2020 – 4:15 PM

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Forest Hills is currently closed to visitors, except grave owners who are allowed to visit their loved ones from 2 to 4pm daily.

Dear Forest Hills Cemetery Community,

I hope this finds you and your family safe and healthy. This letter is to share an update as we strive to navigate this challenging time.

The closure of area schools, parks, playgrounds and all non-essential businesses has brought many new visitors through our gates.  Unfortunately, many of these visitors were not respecting social distancing or the sanctity of the Cemetery.

Given the increased recreational visitation of bikers, joggers and dog walkers, we find it necessary to close our gates to the general public, allowing only visitation by lot and grave owners daily between 2-4pm.

Many other cemeteries have closed their gates (Mount Auburn and Swan Point, for example) for the same reason.

Please know that although our gates are closed, we continue to provide essential burial and cremation services. In fact, we are seeing a significant increase in demand for these services. We are prioritizing the safety and comfort of the families whom we are assisting. We also continue to do all we can to protect our staff so that they can provide these essential services for families and maintain our grounds during the pandemic.

Thank you for your understanding during these unprecedented times.  We look forward to welcoming you back to enjoy the beauty of Forest Hills when we can safely do so.

George H. Milley, III

President, Forest Hills Cemetery

UPDATE: 24 MAR 2020 – 11:22 AM

On March 23, 2020, Governor Baker issued an emergency order requiring all businesses and organizations that do not provide “COVID-19 Essential Services” to close their physical workplaces and facilities to workers, customers and the public as of Tuesday, March 24th at noon until Tuesday, April 7th at noon. The Baker Administration also issued a list of designated businesses and organizations that provide essential services and workforces related to COVID-19 that shall continue to operate brick and mortar facilities during this two-week time period

Cemeteries and crematories are included on this list. During this time, Forest Hills Cemetery will continue to provide the essential services of burials and cremations.

The Baker Administration Order issued on March 23rd limits gatherings to 10 people during the state of emergency, a reduction from the 25-person limit established in an earlier order. This includes community, civic, public, leisure, faith-based events, and any similar event or activity that brings together more than 10 persons in any confined indoor or outdoor space. All cemetery burial services are now limited to 10 people.
